The pitcher and the batter: simple enough; 2 people who play on a team of other players, but at that moment have no one else upon whom to depend for help. It's all about those two. No other player can get involved. The pitcher throws his best stuff, and the hitter does his best to hit the ball. And that very act (hitting a ball), seemingly simple, is one of the most difficult things to do in sports. The batter must hit a small round ball that's being hurled at speeds in excess of 80 mph (most of the time), and he must make contact using a bat, another moving object that is only a few inches in diameter.
